The second part of our travel tips takes us back to the mountains, this time to hike and wonder. Sven Becker lets us take a look at his travel diary and leads us along the picturesque traces of German Romanticism along the Affenstein Promenade to the Lichtenhain Waterfall.

Hiking. Wondering. Blogging. - A romantic detour to Saxon Switzerland.

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains - a place from my childhood. Admittedly, hiking with the family used to be rather unpopular. Nevertheless, I have returned to this wonderful place time and again ever since and am enchanted by its wild and rugged romance.

SVEN RECOMMENDS: There are managed mountain huts on some peaks. They often date back to the early days of the tourist conquest and tempt you with sweeping views and rustic organic cuisine. However, I prefer to bring my own picnic on the table mountains!

Dresden's proximity to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains already fascinated 18th century painters.

Their most famous representative, Caspar David Friedrich, probably settled in the royal city for this reason, among others, and played a key role in shaping our current understanding of German Romanticism. A hiking trail is dedicated to them, linking the most beautiful mountains and impressive cliffs: the Malerweg. Over a good 112 km, spread over six to eight stages, hikers can follow in the footsteps of the past, but also enjoy the moment.

Insider tip in the middle of the national park: the Winterstein, popularly known as the 'Hinteres Raubschloss'

I consider the tour from Bad Schandau over the Schrammsteine, along the Affenstein promenade to the Kuhstall mountain and back from the Lichtenhain waterfall with the old streetcar from 1897 to be one of the most beautiful entry routes into Saxon Switzerland. 17 km of impressive views.
