The 25th anniversary of Felix Nussbaum Haus was the occasion to consider the works of the Jewish artist in a dialog with current artistic positions within a book. Under the title #nichtmuedewerden, text contributions by nine authors were brought together and published in a 152-page, bilingual hardcover booklet. #nichtmuedewerden - Felix Nussbaum and artistic resistance today was also the title of the related exhibition, which we designed and realized.

Challenge

Our task was to transfer the design of the exhibition to the booklet. At the same time, it needed to have an independent character that would function independently of and beyond the exhibition. The contributions were to be illustrated in German and English, with both languages being equally important and at the same time clearly differentiated from each other.

Editorial Design

We decided to design a reversible book that can be read from both sides: one half is in German, the other half is in English.

We took our inspiration for design and layout of the cover as well as for the content from the exhibition catalog and the overall visual appearance of the exhibition. On the cover, we designed a key visual based on the exhibition visual.

For the layout, we placed particular emphasis on maximum readability and a clear structure. We also separated the languages with their own colors to make it easier to find your way through the book. The color code is used everywhere so that you don't get lost.
