Your Space und Outreach.berlin

For Outreach.Berlin, we had the opportunity to accompany the transnational project Your Space. From 2022 to 2025, the project promoted cultural participation among young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Berlin, Warsaw, and Valencia. Through artistic formats, the program offers young people creative ways to express themselves and actively involves them in their local communities. The aim is to strengthen social skills, foster a sense of agency and ultimately establish a long-term EU-wide model for cultural education and active participation in society.

Challenge

How can social diversity and creative participation be translated into a visual language that resonates across Europe? The challenge was to communicate a complex, multi-year project with educational, artistic, and political ambitions in an accessible way – for diverse target groups, from social workers and educational institutions to the general public. The design approach needed to convey not only the content but also the project's attitude: low-threshold, activating and participatory.

An opened laptop takes center stage and shows the user interface of Midjourney within Discord. Several isometric illustrations currently generated with Midjourney can be seen on the screen. On top of the laptop is an iPhone, which also displays the Midjourney interface. The image provides an insight into the design process for the “your space project”.
A person draws with an Apple Pencil on an iPad lying on a wooden table. The Procreate user interface is visible on the iPad, while a colleague's design sketch is illustrated. Next to the iPad is an opened Apple MacBook laptop. Only the hands of the person are visible.
Three yellow posters with black and white, isometric line illustrations of people, cities and activities are stuck next to each other on an advertising space made of black OSB boards. The posters advertise outreach.berlin's “your space project” to promote cultural youth education. In the background is a bright yellow container. A man with headphones, a yellow cap and a black coat walks past the posters; his movement is slightly blurred Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Approach and Implementation

The goal was to create a design that would appeal equally to all project stakeholders – from social workers to decision-makers. The illustration reflects the project’s core principles: artistic activation in urban spaces, collaboration on equal terms and local diversity.
Since the approaches in Berlin, Warsaw, and Valencia differ in part significantly, the illustration presents a variety of settings, project types, and participatory formats as examples – condensed into a shared visual world.

For the initial draft, we used generative AI (Midjourney) to quickly explore visual ideas, test spatial compositions, and vary perspectives. The final illustration was then created by hand – in a custom-developed style that is clear, friendly, and inclusive.

The result is a strong visual element that makes the project’s complexity visible while fostering identification – across language and city boundaries.
